Sixth Annual Golf to Honor Tournament

The son of Carole and David Wayland, Patrick Trevor Wayland was born January 28, 1987. Patrick graduated from Midland High in 2005, where he played varsity football and basketball. An academic letterman, he also was a member of the National Honor Society.  Patrick was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Midland.

Graduating from the U. S. Naval Academy with honors in 2010, Patrick was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He completed the Marine Officers Basic School and qualified as a rifle platoon leader, after which he was assigned to aviation pre-flight indoctrination in Pensacola, Florida.  In August 2011, Patrick sustained injuries in a military training exercise from which he was unable to recover.

In August 2012, more than 150 hometown and military friends participated in the first annual GOLF TO HONOR Patrick Wayland Memorial Golf Tournament. Paying tribute to Patrick’s life, tournament organizers contributed proceeds from the event to the Patrick Wayland Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Foundation. Friends and family continue to honor Patrick's legacy at this annual golf tournament, now in its fifth year. To date, four Midland High School graduates have received Patrick's scholarship.

“I can’t think of a better way to honor Patrick Wayland than this scholarship fund,” said Steve Schorr, senior pastor at First Presbyterian. “Patrick grew up in our church and was involved in Sunday School, choir, youth trips, and his most beloved times, the Spring Break Mission trips.

“We were blessed to see the person he grew into: smart, fun, athletic, faithful, and a servant’s heart.  He is greatly missed, but Patrick was blessed in order to be a blessing.  That legacy continues with this scholarship providing others with an opportunity for a college education.”
